Cloudy with 1-run in Game 1

Jey Young/ Ball Boy Blog

Contest one of this afternoon's double header started cloudy, with scattered rain drops throughout the game. Game one pitching matchup featured Canadians SP Ricky Tiedemann(Blue Jays #4 prospect, according to MLB.com) vs. Dust Devils SP Jose Salvador, who made his High-A debut. Defensively the Dust Devils lined up Knowles in LF and Yon in RF, with Paris at SS and Gregorio at 2B tonight with the Dust Devils wearing their navy blue.

Salvador was working from the 3B edge of the rubber. He quickly got into trouble, allowing a 1st inning HR to Canadians LF Davis Schneider. The HR put the Canadians up early and gave Tiedemann all the run support he needed. Tiedemann came out firing a 96MPH fastball against Dust Devils batters and showed off his +curve and ++ fastball As he worked from the middle of the rubber and looked like a pro.

Salvador got jumped on early in the 2nd for two singles by Canadians 2B Miguel Hiraldo and 3B Tyler Keenan. The young lefty worked out of the jam with a fielders choice, pop-up, and groundball-outs. The Dust Devils made Tiedemann work the hardest he had to all night in the bottom of the 2nd as 2B Osmy Gregorio, RF D'Shawn Knowles, 1B Kenyon Yovan all notched singles off of The Canadian starter. Tiedemann got out of the jam with a strikeout with the bases loaded.

The 3rd inning for the Canadians brought three runs. A BB allowed LF Schneider to come back to hurt the Dust Devils on a throwing error by 3B Guzman, allowing Schneider to score, and 1B Trevor Schwecke was on. 2B Miguel Hiraldo followed it up with a no-doubt HR to LF.

Canadians SP Tiedemann pitched five shutout innings, with 9K, 3H, and no BB. During the game, I sat next to a lovely fan, and she said, "that kid is going to be pitching in the majors someday." I couldn't help but agree with her as Tiedemann looked like a pro and was already too good for the High-A ball; he lowered his High-A ERA from 0.61 to 0.47 in this one. Dust Devils SP Jose Salvador could only go four innings in this contest, throwing 86P, allowing 6H, 4ER, 2HR, 2BB, and only earning 1K. It was a rough start for the new arrival to High-A as he struggled with the HR ball to begin his career with the Dust Devils.

Both teams' relievers went for the rest of the game for their respective teams. Canadians 6'5" RHRP Jol Conception went 2IP, allowing 2H and 1ER and picking up 2K. Dust Devils RHRP Houston Harding went 3IP allowing only 1H, 0ER, 2BB, and picking up 5K.

The biggest takeaway in Game one tonight was both teams struggled with RISP and leaving runners on base. The Dust Devils went 2-6 with RISP and had 6LOB, and the Canadians went 1-7 with RISP and 7 LOB. The game would have looked much different if not for the HR ball. The Series is now tied 2-2. 2nd first pitch is at 7:05 pm, With the Dust Devils wearing their home whites and the Canadians wearing the alternate Reds.
